Alan
Chenkin, I have been blessed with a unique path, and am a trusted
advisor to my friends
First, go to
college with a mission - get a job that will give you income that justifies the
cost of college and can be the basis of a career. Look around, what jobs will
your college degree prepare you for?
Second, take
minor in what interests you. As an example, I have three college degrees. How
did I look for my passion?
I joined the
Volunteer Fire Department (2nd lt, PLLFD). I ran for Student Body
President, was on the Student Council; Took Karate under Sensei Art McConnell;
Took elective courses in Photography (I can afford Nikons now), Psychology,
joined a fraternity (ZBT, Gamma Delta Chapter, CW Post College) -
as a Chartering Brother; (we had our reunion in 2015). Became a carpenter (post
college), Bootstrapped a woodworking business for 10 years, switched to
technology in the “go-go nineties”, and project management / consulting in the
2000’s.
DO. Explore
different paths. Do not sit idly by, but go forth and prepare for a life of
excitement and adventure, before marriage/family/bills/etc. keep you at work
just to make money for your college loans and mortgage.
Only you can forge
the path. Ask questions. Don’t know what to ask? Ask that of your professors!
Seek out advice and try in earnest whatever you can.
It is your
life. Make it a good one. Be bold, and try new things, with wide open eyes.
“May you have a
wonderful and interesting journey”, and learn to inspire others.
